Hello friends! Today I have a guest snippet, by Bethany! She's a talented writer, and I enjoy reading her works. You can read her author bio below her snippet.
“Please don’t ever become a stranger.” She pleaded as I walked away, back turned on her. On everything.
I turned back. “I already am.”
She shook her head, “No. I may not understand everything about you. I don’t know what happened to you, but I will always love you. I chose you, I promised to be with you when we took our vows.” She held up her left hand, displaying the golden band on her ring finger. “We’re not strangers. We know each other in a way no one else can.”
“You don’t understand,” I said gently, placing my hands on her shoulders.
“No. I don’t.” She cried, “So explain. Make me understand. I’m here for you. I can be your support. I love you.”
“And I love you.” I finally replied, my eyes misting.
“Then why…”
I interrupted, “To keep you safe. You can’t love me. You can’t know me.”
“But nothing can make me stop loving you! I will never forget you!”
“And I will never forget you.” I whispered. I pulled a necklace from my pocket, a tiny device in the shape of a heart as the charm. I took her hand and pressed the necklace into it. “Wear this for me.”
Tears were streaming from her eyes, but she took it and put it on. “Thank you.” I whispered. I kissed her goodbye, then touched another small device to the side of her head. Her eyes glazed, and she crumpled into my arms. I carefully laid her on the couch.
I looked back one last time before opening the door and leaving her life forever. I knew when she awoke, I would be forgotten. A single tear trickled down my cheek. But she would be safe.
The memory flashed through my mind in an instant, as I stood face to face with her. “Hello!” She greeted, “My name is Kara.” She smiled. There was an awkward silence. “...And you are?”
I tried to smile, “Classified. I don’t tell strangers my name.”
She smiled quizzically, “Ok…” She pursed her lips, “But if you tell me your name, we won’t be strangers anymore.”
“We will always be strangers.”
