This snippet doesn't have very much of a story to it, but I'll share the background to it anyway.
Like the mulberry bush rhyme that I published a couple weeks ago, this snippet was also based off an August Flash-fiction challenge that I participated this month. I saw the prompt (the first two lines of this snippet) and I immediately starting writing, as it reminded me of one of the first prompts I'd ever used.

Who made you this way?
I did.
I did.
The haunting words searched for him even as he dodged their grasp.
But every day, the running wore him down more. Every day, he struggled to stay away from the monsters in his head.
How much longer could he stand this?
Ahead, a light shimmered in the darkness. He stretched out his arm, reaching for the glimmer, hoping—always hoping—that the taunting star would be real, would be there for him to hold onto and never let go.
